Sigma Aldrich Vending Machines

Today’s guest post is by inspector071.

This is a vending machine stocked with a few lab reagents, gloves, etc. It doesn’t take cash, but rather a card tied to grant money held by a research supervisor. I’ve seen a vending machine for iPods and iPhones, basic school supplies like pens and pencils, but I never thought I’d see one selling Sigma chemicals. Any of you have something similar like this in your workplace?

Those glass bottles at the top, wouldn’t they break when someone buys them? It looks like a 5ft drop down to the collection tray.

I couldn’t find it on S-A’s web site. Someone having fun with Photoshop?

    Regardless, I love the concept.

No, they have these at Oxford (think this might actually be that one…) – I can confirm they are real! And great :) And re. the bottles, a little shelf goes up to collect them. And they don’t put anything too dangerous in them!

    It’s looks very authentic though.
I hope it’s not maintained by whoever’s in charge of the candy dispenser – they might put the tBuLi on top.

Also, do you shake the machine if the bottles get stuck like potato chip bags?

And if you do shake the machine, might you get more than you bargained for?

    So many questions.

Is this the CRL in Oxford (it looks like the end of one of the dirty corridors)? I remember them going in when I worked there. There’s a big lump of foam at the bottom so the bottles don’t smash.

I think this should be referenced to give the proper person credit for actually taking the photo:

We’ve had one at the University of Edinburgh for about a year; it’s being decommissioned due to various problems with items getting stuck. I for one am glad to see it go, if only to stop me impulse-buying NMR tubes instead of washing the old ones!

Yeah I saw it when I looked round the new organic building. It’s in the basement and is 95% of the reason I applied to study at Oxford!

I really love to get some food and drinks from vending machines, vending machines are really one of the greatest inventions that we ever have these days. `.:’:
